Important Varietals: Chardonnay, Cabernet/Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon.
Personal Comments:
James Halliday took quite a punt when he opened this winery and would have been on a real loser if the resultant wines had been even slightly average. This is not because Halliday doesn't know anything about the winemaking process, on the contrary, he knows quite a lot. It's just that before this venture his major connection with the wine industry was as a wine critic. And this would have left him wide open to criticism himself if he didn't produce. He did and the results are quite excellent. I believe that the wines are getting hard to find as their reputation spreads. What I find hard to find is the money in my wallet to pay for them - they tend to be outside my price range these days. But that's fairly standard for the top-flight Yarra Valley wineries anyway.
