Letter by CJD to "Labor Call" 1931.02.26 To "Demos", c/o "Labor Call." Dear Sir. - I want to thank you for your very kindly verses in reply to "Jim." I notice, by the way, that they have been republished in the "Labor Call." While I wish to thank you for the spirit in which the verses were written generally, I would like to point out that the charge you make is quite undeserved. As a matter of fact, the opinions expressed therein are entirely my own. The trouble with some of you hard and fast adherents of organised Labor is that you fail to acknowledge honesty of purpose in any man who does not go the whole way with you. My attitude to Labor classes - of which I am one - is the same as it has always been, and I might point out, for your information, that I have never written anything in verse for "The Herald" under instructions. Finally, will you allow me to congratulate you heartily on the quality of your verses, which are in many respects, better than those of mine, to which you reply.
With kindest regards. - Yours truly, The Labor Call, 26 February 1931, p1 Note: this letter was written in reply to a poem published in the Labour Call by "Demos' under the title 'Den' of the 'Herald', which in turn referred to a poem that was written by CJ Dennis and published in the Herald on 16 February 1931 under the title "Jim". The "Jim" in question is Jim Scullin who was Prime Minister of the time. |
