EVE?

[“Rev. Reginald John Campbell, Congregationalist minister of the City Temple, London, declares that the story of the fall is untrue.” – Cable]

They have told us in the chapel,
That, when Adam bit the apple,
‘Twas a mastication ominous to men
They’ve informed us in the church
That Biblical research
Has proved the fact –- and why and where and when.

We have heard the tale of Eve;
And it’s easy to believe,
That she tempted poor old Adam with a pippin,
We have heard – and seen depicted –-
How the couple were evicted,
And thereafter had to earn their bread an’ drippin’.

And now a clergyman,
Of the City temple clan,
Declares the whole report a fairy fable.
Says the story of the snake
Is a most transparent “fake”
(That must be right, because it came by cable).

But speaking on the spur
Of the moment we aver –-
Though the snake, perhaps, was not on hand to show her –-
That sweet woman played her part
To upset man’s apple-cart,
Is a fact incontrovertible –- we know her!
