THE AFFABLE LINGUIST

Asked what he thought of the action of a high military officer in criticising reports, one of which the Minister of Defence has not yet even seen, Mr Deakin looked thoughtful, and then, shrugging his shoulders, said, "Chacun à son goût.”

When asked to give an answer,
   Mister Deakin shook his head,
Looked thoughtful for a moment.
   Then "Un cabella” he said.

He looked quite pained and nettled
When they pressed for a reply.
And said, "Chi tase confessa,”
With a deep and hopeless sigh.

And when they still persisted,
And refused to let him go,
He grasped his aching brow and cried,
   "Pro bono publico!”

But still they were not satisfied,
   So, finding it no good,
Oh, ___ ___ ___ ___ ___!!! He yelled.
   And then they understood.
